2016 has lived on in infamy as one for the history books. (Remember those clowns with knives??? Yeah, that happened in 2016.) Some beloved icons were lost this year, including Prince, Alan Rickman, Muhammad Ali, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, and Harambe. Our sweet, glorious Harambe. Most know the story: the 17-year-old gorilla was fatally shot on May 28, 2016, after a child fell into his enclosure. The death of Harambe prompted international outcry, and we're still no closer to getting over his death 3 years later. To celebrate the life of this most majestic gorilla, check out some of the top tributes people have paid over the years to our beloved friend.
(Warning: some of the following content might be considered explicit to some people.)
Since the death of Harambe, both real and fake stories have popped up of people trying to get zoos to name their animals in memory of our One and Only. Names offered in remembrance of the western lowland gorilla? Harambe Jr., Harambinho, and Harambetta, just to name a few.
2016 gave us some pretty danks memes, but probably none danker than those paying tribute to Harambe. The Cincinnati Zoo, where Harambe was shot, actually had to shut down its Twitter account for a hot minute because they kept getting bombarded with memes. Need a place to start mining for some fiery ones? Reddit's r/Harambe isn't a bad place to start.
In case you missed it, billionaire memelord Elon Musk dropped a tribute, "RIP Harambe," earlier this year. Stay dank. Check it out.
There's no denying that a lot of the outcry about Harambe's death was merely played up for the laughs, but that doesn't mean that nobody was seriously offended by the incident. Some took the opportunity to criticize zoos themselves, blaming them as conduits for the tragedy. Others took to Twitter (because of course they did), starting the hashtag #JusticeforHarambe. Whether it's legitimate criticism or over the line is for you to decide, but there's no denying it's still a legacy of our BFF.

There's no denying that the 2016 political scene was a wild ride from start to finish; our favorite ape joined in on the fun posthumously when people actually voted for him as a write-in candidate. While it's probably not true that thousands voted for our friend, a few people did legitimately seem to cast their ballot with Harambe as a write-in.
It's the tweet that started it all, from memes to t-shirts. The phrase "d*cks out for Harambe" originally started with one bizarre tweet on July 2, 2016. The rest, as they say, is Internet history.
A 👏 TRUE 👏 FRIEND👏. 😭 Trust us: there's no better way to pay your respects than by listening to this 2-minute tribute song that's racked up over 12 million views. Watch now, press F later.
